Intelligent multi-source energy management for smart communities

Syctech ·

Most large housing societies in India run on more than one source of energy: the grid (EB), the society’s diesel generator (DG) during power cuts, and increasingly rooftop solar and piped gas. Each costs a very different amount. Generator power can cost several times as much per unit as grid power once diesel, maintenance and operator costs are included.

If they are measured on one register and billed at one rate, someone pays for someone else’s usage. Multi-source energy management solves this.

How multi-source metering works

Syctech multi-source metering keeps a separate register for each source: EB, DG, solar and gas. When the grid fails and the generator takes over, the meter detects the change and starts recording against DG. When grid power returns, it switches back to EB.

Each source has:

  • Its own tariff. Grid, generator, solar and gas units are charged at the rates the society sets, from the same prepaid wallet.
  • Its own load limit. A flat might be allowed 5 kW on grid but only 2 kW on generator, so the DG set is never overloaded.
  • Its own record. Residents and the society can see exactly how many units came from each source.

What residents see

In the Syctech app, residents see today’s grid and generator units and cost side by side, weekly trends, and whether they are on grid or backup right now. When supply moves to the generator they know their usage is costing more, which on its own helps reduce load during power cuts.

What the society gets

  • Generator usage per flat, per tower and for the whole township
  • Fair recovery of diesel and maintenance costs
  • Fewer disputes, because every unit is accounted for
  • Remote monitoring of every meter from one dashboard

Working with automatic changeover

Multi-source meters work hand in hand with automatic changeover with current limiter (ACCL) units, which move the load between grid and generator and hold each connection within its backup limit.

Where it fits

  • Townships and societies with DG backup
  • Commercial complexes with shared generators
  • Mixed-use developments
